Zeit ist eine Dimension des Nacheinander und der Dauer, die als zusammenhängend und nicht umkehrbar vorgestellt werden. Sie ist einerseits die Grundlage jeder Veränderung, andererseits nur an den Veränderungen ablesbar und erlebbar.

Die vorherrschende Zeit-Vorstellung der westlichen Kultur ist die objektive Zeit der klassischen Physik (Newtons "wahre, mathematische und absolute Zeit"). Sie gilt als "objektives" (subjektiv nicht veränderbares) Merkmal der Welt. Allerdings wird der Verlauf der Zeit ausgesprochen subjektiv wahrgenommen und eingeschätzt. In der Jugend verrinnt die Zeit, bis das Christkind kommt, im Alter rast sie.

Zeit ist eines der Fundamente der persönlichen Realität. Die zeitliche Einordnung von Ereignissen ist eine der wichtigsten inneren Operationen, mit denen Menschen ihre innere Realität und damit auch das Ich konstruieren. Zeit scheint für die meisten Menschen unbestreitbar real zu sein. Erstaunlich ist, dass es keinen Zeit-Sinn gibt im Gegensatz zu den Körpersinnen für das Sehen, Hören, Schmecken, Riechen und Tasten.

Die neuzeitliche Zeitforschung weist darauf hin, dass es keine Hinweise darauf gibt, dass der Mensch mit einem speziellen Sinn für zeitliche Wahrnehmung ausgestattet sei.

Kulturen und Individuen unterscheiden sich auch nach ihren Vorstellungen über die Zeit und die Art, wie sie Ereignisse zeitlich einordnen.

Die Zeitdiebe und das Kind Momo

Die seltsame Geschichte von den Zeit-Dieben und
von dem Kind, das den Menschen die gestohlene Zeit zurückbrachte

Momo ist ein Mädchen, das wie eine Landstreicherin in der Ruine eines kleinen römischen Amphitheaters am Stadtrand lebt. Menschen, die großen Wert auf Sauberkeit und Ordnung legen, erschrecken vielleicht, wenn sie dem etwas verwahrlosten mageren Mädchen begegnen. Doch Momo versteht es, anderen zuzuhören und sie dadurch in ihren Bann zu ziehen. Sie schütten Momo dann ihr Herz aus und spüren, dass sie selbständig, charakterstark und mit ihrem Leben zufrieden ist.

Eines Tages tauchen in der Stadt Zigarre rauchende aschgraue Herren in spinnwebfarbenen Anzügen mit bleigrauen Aktentaschen auf, in deren Gegenwart es die Menschen fröstelt. Die grauen Herren verstehen sich auf die Zeit, "so wie Blutegel sich aufs Blut verstehen" und reden den Menschen ein, sie dürften nur noch Nützliches tun, um Zeit zu sparen. Der Friseur zum Beispiel hört auf, mit seinen Kunden zu plaudern und schneidet ihnen nun die Haare in 20 statt in 30 Minuten. Seine alte taube Mutter, für die er sich bisher jeden Tag Zeit nahm, bringt er in ein Altenheim.

Auch mit Momo spricht einer der grauen Herren. "Man muss nur immer mehr und mehr haben, dann langweilt man sich niemals", behauptet er. Doch als Momo ihn fragt, ob ihn jemand lieb hat, krümmt er sich und verrät ihr, dass er und seinesgleichen ohne ein von den Menschen angespartes Zeitguthaben nicht existieren können. Weil das vor den Menschen geheim gehalten werden muss, erinnern sich diese nicht mehr an das Gespräch mit den grauen Herren, sobald sie anfangen, Zeit zu sparen.
