Versuchung – Test – Herausforderung
Loslassen – Befriedigungsverzicht
Emotionale Kicks wie etwa Rechthaben, Heimzahlen, Selbstmitleid, Schuldzuweisen und die Opferhaltung sind Versuchungen. Sie erweisen sich vielfach als Teufelskreis, da diese Verhaltensweisen dazu tendieren, sich gesellschaftliche Bestätigung einzuholen. Um sich von dem unlauterem Verhalten zu lösen, muss man die Anhaftung an den "negativen Genuss" preisgeben.
Eine automatisierte Konditionierung in Form eines sich selbst verstärkenden Belohnungssystems nach Pawlovscher Manier entwickelt sich. Wenn die erwarteten Momente der Befriedigung entfallen, stellt sich Frustration und ein Gefühl des Entzugs ein. Kindisch wie das Ego ist, widersetzt es sich gewöhnlich vehement dem auferlegten Befriedigungsverzicht.
Die spirituelle Entwicklung ist ein sich entfaltender Prozess, der über Krisen und Notsituationen und Läuterung in Gang gesetzt wird. Der Grad des spirituellen Bewusstseins bezieht sich auf das, was man geworden ist, statt auf das Ergebnis dessen, was man tut oder gewesen ist. Durch Demut und Achtsamkeit kann man Irrtümer aufheben. Versuchungen – je nach Bewusstseinsebene – begleiten den geistigen Weg. Es ist sinnvoll, sie sich immer mal wieder zu vergegenwärtigen, um auf der Hut zu bleiben. Versuchungen aus dem nichtintegeren Bereich werden häufig unterdrückt, weswegen sie plötzlich ungewollt in den BW-Ebenen des lauteren Bereichs auftauchen.

Hawkins beschreibt eine Versuchung durch Luzifer, die "ihm" widerfahren ist.
On one occasion there was no worldly presence, but on the consciousness level, there was an encounter with a more rarified luciferic presence that promised great power if one went into agreement with it. When this was refused it retreated. This occurred at what might be analogously referred to as a high altitude fail/pass test. One could see and know that Christ had passed through that temptation and had also refused it. [...] It was also obvious that not every entity that had reached this pass/fail test had refused the temptation. In itself the temptation was craftily presented nonverbally as an understanding that 'now that you realize that you are beyond all karma, you are free, without any consequence to reign with great power because there are no consequences for your actions, and no longer are you subject to consequences'.
