Was ist Beten?

Zielgerichtetheit Ergebnisoffenheit – Spindrift Gebetsforschung

Dr. Joan Borysenko (*1945) US-amerikanische Medizinwissenschaftlerin, Pionierin der integrativen Medizin, klinische Psychologin, Stressexpertin, spirituelle Lehrerin, Autorin, zitiert in: Susan Koag, Embracing Our Essence. Spiritual Conversations with Prominent Women [Den eigenen Wesenskern annehmen. Spirituelle Gespräche mit prominenten Frauen], Health Communications, 1995, Nachdruck 1. Oktober 1997

Peter Russell, M.A., D.C.S.

  1. direktes = zielgerichtetes Beten (MEIN Wille geschehe!) versus
  2. indirektes = ergebnisoffenes Beten (DEIN Wille geschehe!)

Gruppengebetsheilungen an Gewässern

               Gruppengebete zeigen sichtbare Wirkung

Bild

Sedona Seminar Vision, 3 DVD-Set, 26. Februar 2005

  • GOTT braucht wirklich keine Wortsalven.

  • Through prayer and meditation one is willing to take a risk. One develops faith. Faith and trust become stronger and stronger. Faith and trust become strong enough so that eventually you're willing to walk off the cliff. I have walked off the cliff a number of times in my lifetime. I've walked off the cliff where all certainty was left behind. And if there was something in the Universe, It would pick you up and carry you through. And if there wasn’t, then that was the end. And, I've had to do it several times and so I've developed the capacity to do it. I've developed sufficient faith and trust that what I really know to be true, I now trust, despite the evidence in my senses and I will walk off a cliff if need be. You might say that we do God's work, by virtue of what we have become. It isn't what we do, it isn't what we
say; it's what we are that counterbalances so much negativity in the world.
So we serve God by being what we are and who we are. With thankfulness in our heart. What a gift o, Lord. What a gift. This lifetime, we became part of
the answer instead part of the problem. [...] So by virtue of what we have become, we have become actually a bles-
sing to the world. And just to know that is already such a tremendous thing, is it not? So I give thanks again, to Thee,
Almighty... for the gift of being here with you together and with that we say 'we are the fulfillment of God's intention for
the human experience'. [...] We are the fulfillment of God's intention for human existence. Wow! What an incredible
thing to know. So by virtue of our existence, we are transforming the world and fulfilling God's intention for mankind
as well as ourselves. [...] We are catalysts for God's Will. Wow. What a responsibility and what a gift and what a joy. [...] We are helping to fulfill God's intention for all of mankind. [...]
So we give thanks to Thee, O Lord, that we have been given this privilege to serve Thee, for the highest good. And
who could ask for anything more? So we are God's gift to the world and you are God's gift to me. [...]
So with that, we love each other; we love each other now and forever. We love each other now and forever for eter-
nity. [...] Only Divinity lasts through eternity and by being part of Divinity, we become eternal in God's love. So we
will be eternal, eternally with each other [...] eternally one with God, and eternally one with each other and serving
    God thusly. Sedona Satsang Q&A, CD 2 of 2, track 8, 4. November 2009

  • Supplication is an act of humility. To lower levels of consciousness, prayer is an attempt to get something for self or others, such as a new car, a job, re-
covery from an illness, or special favors. With progress, this intention to control God is given up and the act of supplication becomes a dedica-
    tion instead of a request
. In war, both sides pray to win. With progression of consciousness from selfishness to selflessness, the quality of prayer shifts to the willingess to be a servant of the Lord and a channel of His Will without trying to specify the what or the how it is to be done.
The Eye of the I From Which Nothing is Hidden, S. 138, 2001

  • Question: What prayers are useful?
Answer: Ask to be the servant of the Lord, a vehicle of divine love, a chan-
nel of God's will. Ask for direction and divine assistance and surrender all
personal will through devotion. Dedicate one's life to the service of God.
Choose love and peace above all other options. Commit to the goal of un-
conditional love and compassion for all life in all its expressions and surren-
    der all judgment to God.
The Eye of the I From Which Nothing is Hidden, S. 201, 2001

  • The facts that are to be unreservedly accepted are simple and very power-
ful. Surrendering to them brings enormous spiritual advancement. […]
    11. Intense prayer augments dedication and inspiration and facilitates progress.

  • Prayer and meditation that focus attention on the whole picture [peripheral vision] of what one is witnessing, rather than getting stuck and involved in details. Equanimity is retained by relating to a total situation instead of to any of its parts. This tends to keep one at the level of witness rather than at the effect of the details with attachment to outcome. I. Reality and Subjectivity, chapter on "Spiritual first aid", S. 379, 2003

Praying and blessing calibrates at 500.

Joint intention in group prayers

Resulting in raise in consciousness.

  • [T]he last two major jumps in the overall level of human consciousness occurred successively after the Harmonic Convergence in the late 1980s, when the collec-
tive consciousness level went up from 190 to 205, and then again at the time of the Harmonic Concordance in November 2003, when it jumped from 205 to 207. At both times, spiritually committed people all over the world prayed simulta-
    neously.
The witnessing of the transition from 205 to 207 happened fortuitously at the end of a lecture in San Fran-
cisco (which was videotaped) when a spiritually committed group of four hundred people simultaneously prayed and
sounded "Om", followed by meditation on the chanting of the Lotus Sutra in Sanskrit. This occurred between the hours
of 5:15 and 5:25 PM California Time. In front of the audience at 5:15 PM, the consciousness level of mankind was ca-
librated at 205. It was then recalibrated at 5:30 PM, following the prayer, and the level had concurrently increased to
the present level of 207. Truth vs. Falsehood. How to Tell the Difference, S. 397-398, 2005

Prayer recommendation:

Compare to the 1st and 2nd steps of Anonymous Alcoholics: "We are hopeless and powerless without God's help."
Hawkins points out that AA is unscientific, yet miraculous, whereas recovery is not medicinally based but occurs by humility and surrender to a higher power.

Caveat to mantras and methods of altering consciousness

  • There is an inherent limitation to repetitious mantras in that they too often result in a semi-autohypnotic altered state of consciousness that actually be-
comes an obstruction to the sought-for state of Realization. Enlightenment is not an altered state of consciousness induced by alpha waves, feedback, or rhythmic repetitions of dance, song, breathing, or body movements.
Discovery of the Presence of God. Devotional Nonduality, S. 82, 3rd paragraph, 2007

  • Not knowing what to pray for, they may come out of it with bitterness because they were praying in the wrong direction of "please undo that, please bring joy back to life. [...], please change what is happening out there." Prayer in that di-
rection is very likely to be ineffective [...]
At this point, the prayer might be, "please be with me; show me how to surrender and handle this experience," and ask for conscious awareness of the Presence of God. We would be asking God to take on the experiencing in place of our-
    self. Healing and Recovery, S. 247, 2009

Pray repeatedly to serve God. Then you become God's problem.

  • I think that one of the most powerful prayers is to repeat that one is a servant of God. You say 'I am a servant of the Lord, therefore my will, my thoughts and all, are of no use.' [You ask] to a be a servant of the Lord and then ask God to express His Will for you, and then you say 'In what way can I be your servant, Oh Lord?' And then God perfects you because you have now become His problem, because now His problem is how to make a better instrument of you. Interview with David R. Hawkins, Dialogues on Consciousness and Spirituality, transcript

  • It is like a cat that declares that your home is his home now, so now you have to feed him. I call that "rattling the gates of Heaven." The way you rattle the gates of Heaven is to tell God you are his servant and he had better do something about it now. And then you pester Him with prayers and supplications. Ramana Maharshi says, "Finally God feels sorry for you and gives you what you pray for." Of course, he is joking on one level; on another level he is very serious. If you start rattling the gates of Heaven, you might say that God now has to pay attention to you. Otherwise, there is this idiot out there claiming he is your servant and you have to do something about him. Interview with David R. Hawkins, Dialogues on Consciousness and Spirituality, transcript on "Advanced States of Consciousness", part 2, S. 82-83, spiral-bound, Veritas Publishing, Sedona, Arizona, 1. • Question: What does it mean to "pray for the highest good"?
Answer: You're asking truth for the sake of truth itself, without having any position about it. In other words, I don't want it for my personal benefit, or for somebody else's personal benefit. Instead of a selfish intention, praying for the highest good means you're depersonalizing it and raising it to a higher level of intention. That prayer helps all
of mankind because you are part of mankind; you are seeing yourself collectively. Interview Healing and Recovery, presented by the US American health magazine "Unified Health!", Matt Laughlin, volume 5, issue 14, S. 21, winter 2009

  • Spiritual evolution is effortless. To be that which you are in suppli-
cation to God already summons forth the energy of the universe. Spiritual work is effortless; it's a decision, a commitment, an in-
    tention
. That intention then aligns you with whatever you need to
be aligned with. You become that which you seek, because that
which you seek is not different from that which you discover. It's
    the ultimate yin posture.
One, more or less lets go and becomes that what you seek, be-
cause that, what you seek, is not different from that, what you dis-
    cover.
So, spiritual work is merely being thus [mudra]. It's the ultimate yin posture.
To get to the ultimate yin posture, you go through a spiritual night – the ultimate yang posture.

Note this suggestion of a mantra

  • You can affirm repeatedly:
    - "My reality is at one with Divine Harmony.
    - My life is controlled by Divine Harmony.
    - Everything is in Divine order.
    - My life is in control."

Because the reality is the Self with a capital "S" is the emergence of the Divine order.

mic proclivities which emerge of their own nature. Sedona Seminar Transcending Obstacles, 3 DVD set, 3. September 2005

  • You surrender your illusion that there is a personal self. God really doesn't need verbalization. God gets what the in-
    tention
is about. The verbalization is putting it in the linear. Therefore I advise to live one's life as a mudra. In other words when you get up in the morning you picture yourself this way to Divinity [opens his hands with the palms up-
wards] and Divinity just got it. You can try to nonverbalize it as a way of being instead of verbalizing it. You yourself become the supplication without verbalizing it. Nonverbal supplication. Let's say, the kitty comes up to me and goes [looks like a kitty begging for benefit and after that he pets an imaginary cat]. What can you do? [Laughter]
Pretend to be a big kitty and just purr up a storm to God. Nonverbal […] just to be that way.

  • Everyone is filling their own karmic destiny. You pray for someone to get sober. They don't. They roll over in a car and they "get it" in the car and then they die. But they got it. From your viewpoint, they did not. Unless you use kinesiology to diagnose it, you don't know whether they did or not.

  • In the middle of cacophony and catastrophe, when the bullets are flying around and the planes are crashing and all
hell is breaking loose, there is nothing but the Infinite Silence. Hmm. So, you identify with that silence and just main-
tain awareness. You can go about your daily life and do everything that you need to do and yet at all times maintain
the awareness of silence. So that gives you a centering. A centering kind of prayerfulness is that you're always aware
of the presence of silence, which is the infinite context. The Reality of the Presence of God is an Infinite Silence. And then that what you hold in mind in that silence tends to manifest, not as a result of causation but as potentiality mani-
    festing.
And we thank thee, O Lord, for Thy Divine Presence, as the Infinite Silence, out of which arises our existence. Amen.

  • It is safe to pray for the purveyors of hatred. [Calibrated as true.] The Buddha said there is no point going to war with them because they will bring themselves down by their own nature. There is no point trying to go to war with evil because evil is self destructive. Jesus Christ said, don't go to war with evil. Why? Because evil plays by different rules than you are aware of. • Question: I'd like to ask how not to doubt. How to overcome the doubt of God?
Answer: Well, you do prayer and the same thing everybody does, 'Dear God, please help me to understand my relationship to Thee and Thy infinite nature.' Just with prayer and supplication, and going to church or whatever devotional activities are part of your life, yes? Service to the poor or service to the sick and dying. […] Yes, devotion.
We have a friend now who is sick. We pray everday to God for alleviation of this person's illness and their recovery. And that's all we can do. Now it's up to their karma. OK? That's all we can do.

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector
To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable:
"Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself
and prayed: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other people – robbers, evildoers, adulterers – or even like this
tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.'
"But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God,
have mercy on me, a sinner.'

Personal avowals

  • As my prayer became more attentive and inward, I had less and less to say. I finally became completely silent. [...] This
is how it is. To pray does not mean to listen to oneself speaking. Prayer involves becoming silent, and being silent, and
    waiting until God is heard.
Søren Kierkegaard [LoC 410] (1813-1855) Danish philosopher, theologian, writer, Christian Discourses, four parts, 26. April 1848

  • I don't pray for things. I pray to be used.
Oprah Winfrey [LoC 500] (*1954) US American talk show host, actress, visionary, billionaire, philanthropist, source unknown

Recommendation

  • When you need aid, you can invoke it through meditation and prayer whenever you need in any incarnation. An open
and loving heart, seeking a higher good without selfish motive, without any shadow of negativity or harm, can invoke
a powerful manifesting energy in order to accomplish its goals. Brian Weiss, M.D. (*1944) US American psychiatrist, hypnotherapist, specialist of past life regression, author, Same Souls, Many Bodies, Piatkus, 4. November 2004

Question

  • Why is it when we talk to God we are said to be praying, but when God talks to us we're schizophrenic?
Lily Tomlin [LoC 460] (*1939) American actress, comedian, producer, writer, material in Tomlin's acts credited to Jane Wagner
(*1935) US American actress, playwright, Lily Tomlin's comedy writer, collaborator, companion and wife at Tomlin's classic site

Recommendation

  • Prayer is not asking. It is a longing of the soul. It is daily admission of one's weakness. It is better in prayer to have a heart without words than words without a heart.
Mohandas Karamchand Mahatma Gandhi [LoC 760] (1869-1948) Indian Hindu sage, spiritual activist leader, humanitarian, lawyer, nonviolent freedom fighter, Prayer, India, 1977, Berkeley Hills Books, reprint edition July 2000

  • Our prayer must not be self-centered. It must arise not only because we feel our own need as a burden we must lay upon God, but also because we are so bound up in love for our fellow men that we feel their need as acutely as our own. To make intercession for men is the most powerful and practical way in which we can express our love for them. John Calvin [LoC 580] (1509-1564) influential French Swiss theologian, pastor during the Protestant Reformation, founder of the
Christian theology later called Calvinism, cited in: Goodreads Quotable Quote

  • Serene in our faith and tranquil in our soul, let us pray and continue to pray, because intense and fervent prayer pierces the heavens and is backed up by a Divine guarantee. Padre Pio [Pio of Pietrelcina] [LoC 585] (1887-1968) Italian Capuchin priest, saint in the Catholic Church, cited in: Christian Forums

  • The average man prays to God with his mind only, not with all the fervor of his heart. Such prayers are too weak to bring any response. We should speak to the Divine Spirit with a feeling of closeness, as to a father or mother. Our relationship with God should be one of unconditional love.
A definite conception of God (such as that of the Divine Mother) is necessary, otherwise one does not receive a clear response. And the demand for the Lord's reply should be strong; a half-believing prayer is not sufficient. If you make
up your mind: "He is going to talk with me"; if you refuse to believe differently, regardless of how many years He has
not answered you; if you go on trusting Him, one day He will respond.
Paramahansa Yogananda [Mukunda Lal Ghosh] [LoC 540] (1893-1952) Bengalian Indian Hindu sage, yogi, philosopher, author, How You Can Talk with God, Self-Realization Fellowship, 5. August 1957

  • The function of prayer is not to influence God [the Divine] but rather to change the nature of the one who prays.
Søren Kierkegaard [LoC 410] (1813-1855) Danish existentialist philosopher, theologian, writer, cited in: Goodreads Quotable Quote

  • Prayer is the most powerful form of energy one can generate. The influence of prayer on the human mind and body
is as demonstrable as that of secretion glands.
Prayer is a force as real as terrestrial gravity.
Alexis Carrel (1873-1944) French surgeon, biologist, pioneer of vascular suturing techniques, Nobel laureate in physiology/medicine, 1912, cited in: Goodreads Quotable Quote

  • If you want to receive divine light, pray.
If you have begun to make progress and want this light to be intensified within you, pray.
And if you have reached the summit of perfection and want to be super-illumined so as to remain in that state, pray.

  • We need a power strong enough to change human nature and build bridges between man and man, faction and faction. This starts when everyone admits his own faults instead of spot-lighting the other fellow's. God alone can change human nature. The secret lies in that great forgotten truth, that
    • when man listens, God speaks;
    • when man obeys, God acts;
    • when men change, nations change.
Rev. Frank Buchman (1878-1961) US American Protestant Christian evangelist, minister, founder of the Oxford Group [Moral

  • The lost mode of prayer is a form of prayer that has no words, no outward expression, and is based simply in feeling. Storytelling

  • There is a guy who comes to see a great Sufi master and he said to the master:
"Master, so great is my trust in God that I have not even tied my camel to the post outside. I have left it to the providence and the care of God."
And the Sufi master said:
"Go out and tie that camel to the post, you fool! God can not be bothered doing what you can do for yourself."

Poem

Prayer to one's own deep soul

Now pray,
as I who came back from the same confusion learned to pray.

I returned to paint upon the altars those old holy forms,
but they shone differently, fierce in their beauty.

So now my prayer is this:
You, my own deep soul, trust me. I will not betray you.
My blood is alive with many voices telling me I am made of longing.

What mystery breaks over me now? In its shadow I come into life.
For the first time I am alone with you – you, my power to feel.

Prayer saved lives faced with nuclear blast

Bild
Nagasaki bomb
Hiroshima, Japan, 6. August 1945 (causing the immediate death
of 75,000 civilians)
At 2:45 a.m. August 6, 1945, a B-29 bomber took off from the island of Tinian to drop the first atomic bomb on Japan. At 8:15 a.m. the bomb exploded eight city blocks from the Jesuit Church of Our Lady's Assump-
tion in Hiroshima. Half a million people were annihilated. However, the church and eight Jesuit fathers stationed in a rectory only eight blocks from the blinding center of the nuclear flash survived the searing hurricane of blast and gamma rays during the atomic bomb explosion (four of the priests were Fathers Hugo Lassalle, Kleinsorge, Cieslik and Schiffer). According to the experts they "ought to be dead," being within a one-mile radius of the explosion. The survivors attributed their rescue to having prayed the Rosary daily and living the Fatima message.
Nine days later on August 15, Feast of Our Lady's Assumption, U.S.
forces were ordered to cease fire.

Nagasaki, Japan, 11:02 a.m, 9. August 1945 (causing the immediate death of 75,000 civilians)
A Franciscan Friary in Nagasaki established by Saint Maximilian Kolbe (1894-1941) was also unharmed by the atomic explosion.

I met Fr. Schiffer in the late 70s at the Tri-City Airport in Saginaw, Michigan, as he was going to give a talk for the Blue Army Novena/Triduum. As I chauffeured him around he told me stories of his life, especially of the atomic explosion at Hiroshima. On the morning of August 6, 1945, he had just finished Mass, went into the rectory and sat down at the breakfast table, and had just sliced a grapefruit, and had just put his spoon into
the grapefruit when there was a bright flash of light. His first thought was that it was an explosion in the harbor
(this was a major port where the Japanese refueled their submarines.)
Then, in the words of Fr. Schiffer:

"Suddenly, a terrific explosion filled the air with one bursting thunder stroke. An invisible force lifted me from
the chair, hurled me through the air, shook me, battered me, whirled me 'round and 'round like a leaf in a gust of autumn wind."

The next thing he remembered, he opened his eyes and he was laying on the ground. He looked around and there was NOTHING in any direction: the railroad station and buildings in all directions were leveled to the ground. The only physical harm to himself was that he could feel a few pieces of glass in the back of his neck. As far as he could tell, there was nothing else physically wrong with himself. Many thousands were killed or maimed by the explosion. After the conquest of the Americans, their army doctors and scientists explained to him that his body would begin to deteriorate because of the radiation. Many of the Japanese people had blisters and sores from the radiation. To the doctors amazement, Fr. Schiffer's body contained no radiation or ill-effects from the bomb. Fr. Schiffer attributes this to devotion to the Blessed Mother, and his daily Fatima Rosary. He feels that he received a protective shield from the Blessed Mother which protected him from all radiation and ill-effects. tldm.org

Praying for peace and calm – in times of crisis

Studying peace – like visiting websites about peace, reading biographies and quotes of Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela – helps to acquire basic wisdom.

Scenario: A plane is flying over Gandhi's ashram to bomb him

Gandhi's prayer solution meets escalation of physical force with soul force. It is a constructive form of resistance, which overcomes the tendency toward fear and flight.

Intricate politics can hardly be fully understood by humans who are socialized by entirely different languages and environments.
Comparing a current dangerous world situation with similar historic events may render a bigger picture. It may also lead
laymen astray.
Imposing growth on the unwilling or the unable does not work.
Whoever keeps praying for God's peace, the prevention of harm, and the healing of hearts may lead with humility.

Unanswered prayers

I asked God to take away my pride. And God said "No".
He said it was not for Him to take away, but for me to give up.

I asked God to make my handicapped child whole. And God said "No".
He said her spirit was whole, her body was only temporary.

I asked God to grant me patience. And God said "No".
He said patience is a by-product of tribulations. It isn't granted, it is earned.

I asked God to give me happiness. And God said "No".
He said He gives me blessings, happiness is up to me.

I asked God to spare me pain. And God said "No".
He said suffering draws me apart from worldly cares and brings me closer to Him.

I asked God to make my spirit grow. And God said "No".
He said I must grow on my own. But He will prune me to make me fruitful.

I asked for all things that I might enjoy life. And God said "No".
He said He will give me life, that I may enjoy all things.

I ask God to help me love others, as much as he loves me.
And God said Ah, finally you have the idea!

First remove, learn, bend, forgive...

Go not to the temple to put flowers upon the feet of God,
First fill your own house with the fragrance of love

Go not to the temple to light candles before the altar of God,
First remove the darkness of sin from your heart.

Go not to the temple to bow down your head in prayer,
First learn to bow in humility before your fellowmen.

Go not to the temple to pray on bended knees,
First bend down to lift someone who is down-trodden.

Go not to the temple to ask for forgiveness for your sins,
First forgive from your heart those who have sinned against you.
