In einem vornehmen Großstadtviertel steht ein obdachloser Mann in zerlumpten Kleidern vor einer schicken Villa.
Frage an den Leser: Welche Reaktion tritt bei mir als dem Betrachter auf?

Power vs. Force, chapter 20 The Evolution of Consciousness, S. 240-242
Willst Du etwas schmaler machen,
Laotse [BW 610] (604-531 v. Chr.) chinesischer Weiser, Philosoph, Begründer des Taoismus

Gurdjieff had his students write this sentence – in secret code – on the wall of their exercise room. |
But men may construe things after their fashion
clean from the purpose of the things themselves.
William Shakespeare [LoC 465] (1564-1616) English dramatist, playwright, lyricist, actor
In a posh neighborhood of an affluet city an old homeless man (a 'bum') in ragged clothes is leaning against the wall of an elegant mansion.
Question for the reader: How do I react to the situation, the person in focus?
| Reactivity/Response | Inner dialogue |
| Reaction 1 | He appears to me dirty, disgusting, and disgraceful. |
| Reaction 2 | This lazybone deserves what he gets. Is he a welfare cheat? |
| Reaction 3 | His suffering weighs me down. He is evidence that society can't do anything about homelessness. |
| Reaction 4 | The old man looks tragic, friendless, and forlorn. |
| Reaction 5 | The bum is a menace. He is threatening me. I better call the police before he commits some crime. |
| Reaction 6 | His presence here is frustrating for me. Why does nobody do something in this case? |
| Reaction 7 | He could be violent. It makes me furious that such horrible conditions exist in this country. |
| Reaction 8 | This man is an embarrassment. He is lacking the self-respect to better himself. |
| Response 9 | He needs a job and a place to live. Where is the local homeless shelter? |
| Response 10 | The bum looks okay, doesn't hurt anyone. He might be interesting. Live and let live. |
| Response 11 | What can I do to cheer up this fellow on the corner? |
| Response 12 | Wonder what interesting story he has to tell? |
| Response 13 | This man is a result of the current economic and social malaise. He could testify in a psychological study. |
| Response 14 | He's a friendly old man, somehow loveable. |
| Response 15 | This is a joyful guy, who has gained some wisdom of age. He might be indifferent to material things. |
| Response 16 | He has become a free being who has transcended social limits. This fellow does reflect my own self in a temporary expression. |
