Feldherr und Heer waren ausgezogen. Doch niemand im Reich hatte erfahren, was sie in der Ferne ausgerichtet hatten. Als der König nach vielen Monaten noch immer ohne Nachricht geblieben war, schickte er einen Kundschafter aus, um die Lage im Kriegsgebiet zu überprüfen und ihm Bericht zu erstatten.

Im Feindesland stieß der Bote auf ein Lager, aus dem schon von Weitem das fröhliche Stimmengewirr eines Festes zu hören war. Der Feldherr und seine Soldaten saßen gemeinsam mit den Feinden des Königs an einem Tisch und feierten.

Der Kundschafter stellte den Feldherrn seines Königs zur Rede:

Ihr habt den Auftrag des Königs nicht ausgeführt!
Statt die Feinde zu vernichten, habt ihr euch mit ihnen verbrüdert.

Gelassen erwiderte der so gescholtene Feldherr:

Den Befehl des Königs haben wir sehr wohl ausgeführt.
Der Feind ist vernichtet UND
wir haben neue Freunde gewonnen!

Buschfeuer-Dilemma

Problem: Ein Aboriginal sieht, dass ein rasendes Buschfeuer in seine Richtung wächst. Er hat panische Angst vor Feuer.
Lösung: Er entfacht hinter sich ein weiteres Feuer, um damit die hinter ihm liegende Steppe abzubrennen. Er wartet, bis die Steppe verbrannt ist und schreitet dann über den Ascheteppich. Auf der anderen Seite des Ascherandes kann das große Buschfeuer ihm nichts mehr anhaben, da es auf "verbrannter Erde" keine Nahrung mehr findet.

7-Step model for conflict resolution – Stewart Levine

Have the attitude of resolution.
Get in the frame of mind to be willing to resolve conflict. Focus on what the conflict is costing everyone and what everyone can gain from a resolution. Stop thinking of conflict as a win/lose proposition. Arguing over who's right often does not lead to a resolution that anyone wants.
Open up and be truthful. Commit to and invest yourself in the process.
Tell your story and listen to the story of the other side.
Resolution arises from sharing information, while conflict arises from withholding it.
Listen for a preliminary vision of resolution.
As you get more information, check to make sure that your vision meets the concerns of all the parties involved.
Get current and complete information on the issues.
You must be up-to-date in order to move forward with a resolution.
Reach an agreement in principle.
Come to a broad understanding of what the resolution will be.
Craft the new agreement.
Create a template for agreement including the following elements: Intent, specific vision, roles, commitments to action, timeline, measurements of satisfaction, concerns and fears, renegotiation, dissolution, consequences, dispute resolution, and management of the process.
Celebrate the resolution.

Compliance to orders – Foes ⇔ Friends

A king sent out his commander with a troop of soldiers to a foreign battle field.
His command to the general was:

Vanquish my foes!

After the general and the army had left the kingdom had not received any news about what had resulted in the distance. After many months passed the king, disquieted, sent out a scout to search for the commander and to report back.

On assumed war territory the scout came across a camp, out of which one could hear gay babble of voices. Coming closer he found the commander and his soldiers sitting together with the king's foes at a table and having a good time.

The scout took the commander in charge to task:

General, you have failed to execute the king's order!
Instead of eliminating your king's foes you are fraternizing with them.

The chided commander serenely replied:

Certainly, we have executed the king's command.
The enemy is vanquised AND we have made new friends!
